Just a reminder that the Arties award gala is this week, Thursday the 10th @ 7:30p after the Student Works Show gallery reception (6-7p)

TICKETS to the award show are required, limited, and going fast! Pick yours up at Jeannie's desk in the Art offices. They are free.
And let everybody know you'll be there, by RSVPing at the Facebook Event!

Student Works Show open!

The 5th Annual Student Works Show gallery exhibit is open this morning, so come by and see all your fellow student's talents on display!
(There's rumor of a ballot box coming soon for you to vote for the people's choice best in show piece, too!)

Don't forget to come by on March 10th, 6-7p for the official gallery reception with refreshments!

Then, that same night, come downtown to the Community Building for the Arties Award Ceremony which will be kicked off by the Student Works Show winners awarded cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place in each artistic category!

SWS Theme decided!

Traditionally every year to keep the 2 separate awards separate, we give them their own identities/themes. And this year's Student Works Show theme has just been unveiled... vintage Pop (Comic) Art!

It gives a nod to the early 1960s vintage black-tie theme of the Arties, but keeps the two distinctly different. Plus the student works show gallery always lends itself to be a little more hip & spunky/edgy ;)

If you're still trying to figure out how the Arties are different from the SWS, we've laid it out exactly for you...check out the info in the new Facebook Event, to explain what these events are all about. While you're there, RSVP to let us know you'll be there, and invite JBU friends & family too!

Arties/SWS: Dates, Times

Just an up date on new confirmed details...

Student Works Show submissions accepted between February 9th-11th (Wed-Fri.). The Student Works will all be hung in the gellary which opens Feb. 17th.
All entries are $5, and $3 for COAST members. Check back soon for some more specifics on changes to the Cinema category this year.
Any student can submit multiple works, that are original & created after last year's SWS.

The SWS Gallery Reception will be from 6-7p, before the Arties award ceremony, at 7:30p in the downtown Community Building. The SWS & Arties winners are announced at the big event- Thursday night, March 10th.

This year's Arties theme is "Vintage Black-tie"...late '50s/'60s. You know, 'frocks' & fedoras. For inspiration think Mad Men, or even the wardrobe of White Collar's Neal Caffrey, for the guys.

SWS / ARTIES just around the Corner!

Just an 'early' reminder to start working on your pieces to submit to the Student Works Show held every Spring semester.

Every Spring COAST puts on a Student Works Show where any student can submit as many pieces of original art work from that year, as they'd like. They all get judged by professionals in the fields, and every piece is exhibited in the Art Building's Gallery for one big student Art Show. Plus there are always big cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places of each art category!

This year's SWS Gallery exhibit is a little earlier than usual: February 17th - March 18th, 2011. The deadline to submit your art will be even earlier, so that there is plenty of time to judge before getting it put up in the Gallery.
So start spreading the word now, and working on the pieces you'll want to enter for those big prizes!

And don't forget the big cherry on top. It's all wrapped up with the big ARTIES award ceremony event where the SWS winners will also be announced & the prizes distributed. A really fun, exciting event for the whole creative JBU community!

Hello all you COmmunication Arts STudents & Creative types in general!

We're starting to get things rolling for a new year of COAST, and we want to make it a great one. Full of events pertinent to you, and truly involving all of the communicative art departments this year...that includes you, Music/Broadcast/Communication students!

Please be on the lookout here and on campus bulletin boards for posts & posters with more info as more events roll along. For now we already have our first event ready for you to utilize your talents to give back to the local community. But it's coming up quick, tomorrow! Read further for more details:

"Chalk-It-Up," is happening this Saturday, September 18th, from 10am to Noon.
The city of Siloam Springs puts on this event every year. Local kids come for face painting, sidewalk chalk, Pla-Doh, jewelry making and other art activities.

COAST students have helped out 2 years running, and this year we've volunteered again to bring students to help run the different booths, and we would love your help! This is your opportunity to get involved! Anybody (COAST member or not) is welcome to come help.

We will meet at the Flagpoles, Saturday morning before 9:30a. We will leave at 9:30 to travel to the La-Z-Boy Softball Complex in town. Drivers are needed as well, if you have a car and can help shuttle people to the event, please come prepared to drive.

Script Competition

It is time for the second annual COAST short film production! First things first is the script competition!

RULES
- Only COAST members may participate (COAST membership is $15. Pay Jeannie Abbott in the art offices if you are not yet a member. T-shirt included)
- Script must be 15 pages or less
...- Include printed hard copy plus 1 page synopsis and 14 word TV guide description
- Due Thursday evening, September 30th
- E-mail confirmation of your participation in the contest due Monday, September 20th (or Friday at the latest)
- Prepare a 2 minute pitch to sell your script to the judges

- $50 cash prize plus your script will be made into a film, submitted to film festivals, and will appear on IMDb

Contact Jesse Daniel (danielja@jbu.edu) for more information and rules.

The winning script will be COAST property. If your script is picked you will still be the writer (if you choose), your name will appear in the credits as writer, and you will be working with the director to revise the script for the production.

Any COAST member (including the writer) may apply for the position of director. The winner of the script writing competition will not automatically be the director. More about this later.

"The Crossing" screenings! (Update)

What you've all been waiting for! Many of you couldn't make it, only got to see the last bit, or couldn't get a great view in the standing-room-only, due to the throngs of viewers who showed up to the premiere night.

So we'll be having a few more screenings before the semester is out. Come Monday through Thursday this week, at 8pm in the smaller Theatre room, ART 112, in the Art building.

Come have fun learning a beautiful new artistic technique. A great break from the stresses of the semester, and a fun time with your fellow art students.

Once again, thank you everyone for coming out to see the premier of COAST's first annual SFS short film. Stay posted for information on how to get the DVD.

Something I forgot to mention was that at the premier Andrew Armstrong, the president of COAST, announced the second annual short film production. COAST invites you to be part of next year's big production! The Student Filmmaker Society will be taking script submissions Fall semester, 2010. You're script could be the next movie we produce. So if you have a script idea, start writing now!

The Crossing: Update

On Friday evening JBU students, faculty, and other ladies and gentlemen packed into the Bynum Theater to see the first showing of The Crossing.

For the first COAST SFS annual student film, I think it's a good start. Over 40 JBU students were involved in the making of this film, and it is definitely something each one of them can be proud of.

This whole semester has been filled with production work and with students putting in long hours to shoot and edit this film. The last day of shooting involved three locations and lasted over 14 hours for the crew and some of the actors. Powered by sugar, caffeine, and determination, several students ignored the existence of sleep in order to finish the editing in time for the premier.

I directed the film and put a lot of hours into the making of it, but The Crossing can't rightly be called my film. So many students took responsibility and fulfilled their roles, remained dedicated through the whole production, and on many occasions went beyond the call of duty to make this thing happen.

That's what I'm so excited about; the fact that so many people put so much work into this film. This wasn't a class project they did for a grade. This was film making for the love of film making. Coming out of this, those who were on the cast and crew now have extra experience and skills they can take to the next COAST film, their own class projects, even a job or internship on a crew. To those who worked on this film, I congratulate you for a job well done.

We're still working on some editing tweaks, but in the meantime we will be showing the film several more times in the JBU Art Building. Stay posted for more info on the schedule.

We had a lot of fun making this film and would love to share some of our experience with you. Check back later for more behind the scenes photos and information. For now, check out this map to see the places where we shot the movie.

"The Crossing" to premiere tonight!

** UPDATE: Location has changed to the Bynum Theatre due to inclimate weather! Read more below.**

COAST's Student Filmmakers Society has completed its first annual student short film production!

The original working title has officially been changed to The Crossing, and will make its debut at the first SFS movie premiere tonight at 9pm in the Bynum Theatre of the Walton Health Complex on campus (the theatre is immediately inside the front entrance of the WHC).

The premiere is immediately following the Art Department's Senior Portfolio Show tonight from 4:30 to 9p. So come support the JBU Art students, see their beautiful works from the past few years, and then head right over to enjoy the first COAST student film production. Plus there'll be rootbeer floats, and possibly other yummy snacks like popcorn and the like.

We can't wait for you to see all the great work the students have put into this project!

Since the title change there is also a new official Facebook Page under construction (but currently accessible) for The Crossing, as we work to transfer all that data to the new page. So don't forget to become a fan, and check back here for more information as it comes.

COAST's Quartermaster production update

The 1st Annual COAST SFS short film production is well under way. We are already almost 1/2 way through, having completed principle photography for 7 of 16 script pages. And things are going really well.

One very short teaser has already been edited and put together with music, by Producer, Andrew Armstrong (see below). The Quartermaster also has it's own Facebook page now, where you can view the teaser in full HD!

The little bit of footage seen in this first cut together teaser is already receiving big praise, and looks top of the line, rivaling some of the best HD video currently being produced in the mainstream.

Director, Jesse Daniel, specifically points out how integral his amazing crew has been through the whole production. He explains how great it is that with each shoot they only get better and better at working cohesively as a team and getting things going smoothly and with professionalism...really aiding in the great turn out of footage we're seeing so far.

"The Quartermaster"

Production Update, 02/10/2010

Cast:

Call-back auditions were held Monday, February 1.

These auditions will help to determine which actors

will fill one remaining lead role and two remaining

supporting roles, they serve as follow-up to the

initial auditions held the previous week, enabling

Director Jesse Daniel to narrow his options and

make the best possible casting decision about key

roles in the upcoming film. So far, the production

has formally hired eight actors and is in the

process of choosing two more.

Crew:

The production team of “The Quartermaster” is

expanding rapidly as students and faculty across

the JBU campus begin to gain interest in the

project. In the first week of February alone the

production has hired three Russian translators,

two production photographers, two camera operators

and a graphic designer. Some positions that still

need to be filled include Editors, Production Assistants,

Gaffers, Sound Technicians and additional volunteers

for a PR team.

Equipment:

“The Quartermaster” will be the first COAST film to

be shot entirely on digital SLR cameras. Using

this cutting-edge technology, in combination with

the innovative Redrock Micro System (provided by

the Digital Media Department at JBU), the

filmmakers will be able to shoot in the very best

high-definition video, with all the advantages of a

flexible, handheld camera system.

Schedule:

In order to make the most of the available time

frame, the producers of “The Quartermaster” are

fast-tracking the production schedule, and plan to

begin principle photography on 02/11/2010.

Although production is already well underway,

additional help is still welcomed.

Hello, Creatives!
Because a movie is the great culmination of every single art form, we know that we need you and your unique creative skills to make this new production a success.
COAST's (Communication Art STudents) cinema branch, SFS (or Student Filmmakers Society), is in the midst of their first annual short film. Last semester was spent writing the script and some other pre-production stuff. This semester we have some of the finishing pre-production work to do before shooting principle photography (filming the scenes) as soon as possible in February, in time for post production by the end of March. This short will be ready in time for the Arties/Student Works Show in April, so we have a lot of exciting work to do.

Crew Needed for Short Production

Next Semester COAST is producing the winning film from the Pitch Competition. We are looking to fill some lead positions to help us kick things off next semester. All interested should contact Andrew Armstrong (producer) at armstrongR@jbu.edu. When submitting for the job please include the best time for a brief face to face meeting/interview before leaving for the holidays. The positions we're seeking to fill are below.

Art Director
     o Oversees three major areas: wardrobe, sets, and props. Responsibilities will include directing a production design team and communicating with the director and/or DP to achieve his desired visual style for the production.

Associate Producer
     o Oversees the marketing of the film. Responsibilities will include public relations, directing a marketing team during production and preparing all materials for festival submissions.

UPM (Unit Production Manager)
     o Organizes the production, responsible for coordinating schedules and planning production days. Responsibilities include communicating with the whole production team regarding schedules and arranging the production to fit within its overall schedule.

This last Friday (Nov. 6) about 16 of us from COAST, including our Profs- Ward, Sned, and Goehner road-tripped it up to KC, MO for a great day full of art, fun, and inspiration. Every First Friday of the month the downtown Crossroads area of KC opens its galleries, studios, and restaurants for the throngs of people that come through to experience the creativity, sights, sounds, flavors, and company of other new people.

For a few years now COAST has made this treck in December, just in time for the Christmas lights, but this year we chose November, and it was amazing. For one, God blessed us with a perfectly gorgeous Fall day, and even into the night it never got cold...perfect street strolling. We even had a few street performers out, including fire-twirlers, dancers, and a walking art exhibit that came to you!

There was a ton of great art, too, of course. We saw some fun robots with personality, by these guys, some interesting (and incredibly expensive) ceramic sculpture, beautiful paintings, and photography, and then some great print work by students and also by the pros at Hammerpress.
Apart from the local art scene we also got to visit some real art museums earlier in the day which I particularly enjoyed. The Nelson-Atkins (a free museum) had amazing an amazing historical art collection including Egyptian, Native American, Chinese, and lots of art that several of us had just finished studying in our text books in Mr. Peer's Art History class. So that was particularly exciting to see whole rooms dedicated to chapters we just went through in our book, and be able to recognize painter's and sculptor's names and styles before even reading the placards!

Oh, and I almost forgot- there was even a little bit of shopping and dining in the beautiful Country Club Plaza. For those of us that miss the better options of big cities, we visited the Apple store and Urban Outfitters, among other favorites.

We had a great time and are definitely looking forward to it again next year. Thursday (11/05/09) begins our British theme. We will begin this theme by watching Snatch. This movie is absolutely brilliant. You won't want to miss it.

Warning: This movie is highly obscene. Since we're an art club, we can view this film with an "artistic perspective", but I have to warn you to be able to show this film.

Come by the art building, room 112 at 9:15 to witness this fantastic film. We'll have popcorn and coke.

COAST Creative Studios- Job (& possible internship) openings!

COAST is seeking two students for positions in the newly created COAST Creative Studios. These positions come with real industry experience, great leadership/résumé builders, and may be coupled as a full internship if you meet criteria.

COAST Creative Studios Mission Statement:
COAST Creative Studios is the fundraising branch of COAST responsible for pursuing, organizing and completing non-profit design projects. It is committed to creating opportunities for JBU art students through a professional design firm environment.

Art Director:
We are seeking a self-motivated individual to organize and lead COAST Creative Studios. Preferably a Junior or senior able to manage multiple team projects. Those interested must submit a resume and a portfolio of best work consisting of a minimum of 10 pieces.

Director of Imagery:
We are seeking someone to assist the Art Director of COAST Creative Studios in organizing imagery and digital media. Must have a good eye for design and the ability to assist in multiple projects. Those interested must submit a resume and a portfolio of best work consisting of a minimum of 10 pieces.

COAST Creative Studios Seeking Writer for Short Film

COAST Creative Studios is looking for someone to write the screenplay for our up coming project "The Quartermaster".
The story outline won the COAST pitch contest and is now being made into a short film and we're looking for someone to write the 10-15 page script during the month of November. This is an excellent opportunity to expand you own writing talent and the short film itself going to be submitted to several festivals; including SXSW, AFI Dallas, and Sundance! If you're interested please email me at armstrongr@jbu.edu and please include a short sample of your work. No previous scriptwriting experience required, but is a plus.

Below is an expert from the winning pitch:

“Our story begins with two men approaching a border crossing in an old Volkswagen, their identity, mission, and cargo unknown. They could only hope that would still be the case in a few moments when they passed under the harsh scrutiny of the guards.
“Lord, when you were on earth you made blind eyes see. Now I pray, make seeing eyes blind”. This was Brother Andrew’s prayer when, in 1957, he neared the Yugoslav border with a car full of Bibles. Half a century later, the two men glanced at each other, their gaze meeting, both fully aware of the consequences of being caught.
“It was a mission fraught with peril and pathos, financed by faith, supported by miracles.”

The COAST meeting Tuesday night was a blast! We announced the winner of our production competition; which was "The Quartermaster"! Big congratulations to the Daniel Brothers for coming up with this great idea and we can't wait to see the completed film this coming spring.

The COAST Creative Studios is responsible to putting together design and production teams for COAST Projects. The night ended with some wonderful show and tell by several COAST members. Student shared many websites and books that get them inspired to design and create. Even Professor Goehner got in on the fun and shared how his students surprise and inspire him. The links of inspiration will be posted on the COAST blackboard for everyone to see. Over all it was a great night and I look forward to our next all COAST meeting in November.

Thursday (10/8/09) is our first meeting! I don't know about you, but I'm immensely excited.

I'll be showing Arsenic and Old Lace. It's a wonderful comedy from 1944. Don't dismiss this movie because it's old... you're going to love it.

Synopsis: A drama critic learns on his wedding day (Halloween) that his beloved maiden aunts are homicidal maniacs, and that insanity runs in his family.

COAST Was There: Chalk It Up!

September 19th, Siloam Springs Parks & Recreation hosted a community event for children called "Chalk It Up!", and COAST was there! Members of COAST helped encourage kids creativity by building crafts, painting, sidewalk chalk art, sculpting play-doh, making bead necklaces, and much more.
